2013 First Quarter Report

Ok, so based on the list of Goals for 2013, I’ve gotten a good bit of work done in the first 3 months of the year. Always room for improvement but not too shabby!

#2 Swim with Whales: Ok, well…this was a fail but it WAS an attempt so I’m counting it as done for this year. Something to try again next year.

#8 Sell a piece of art (and realize my childhood dream, which is #28 on the 40/40 list): Nothing yet.

#46 Scuba Diving: Continue practicing my SCUBA skills by going at least once this summer. Gonna use my new GoPro to capture the excitement that is the murky depths of the rock quarry.

#52 Read the Greatest Books Ever Written (#7 on the 40/40 list): Supposed to be working on at least 2 this year. Nada so far.

#65  Shout ‘Drinks Are on Me!’ in a Pub or Bar (#17 on the 40/40 list): Not yet.

#84 Learn to Ski (#32 on the 40/40 list): Went in January and had a blast.

Goals from my 40 Before I’m 40 List:

#1 Be Able to Do a Pull Up: Very much working on it. I can lift 100 pounds so far. About 35 pounds to go.

#11 Learn to Rock Climb: Went rock climbing on Pilot Mountain for “real” rock climbing a week ago. That’s where the photo above comes from. Post to come.

#12 Take a Cooking Class: Nothing yet.

#18 Watch the  Top 250 IMDB List/Watch All of the Oscar Best Picture Winners: Nothing yet.

#25 Drink All the Beers on the GQ List: Nothing yet.

#31  Learn to swim (#87 on the 101 list: Conquer Your Fear): COMPLETED!

#35 Visit all of the NC Breweries: The original goal was to visit 7 this year. I’ve visited Trophy Brewing and Raleigh Brewing thus far.

#36 Learn How to Ballroom Dance: Nada yet.

From the Sports List:

#18 Attend a rugby game (and learn the rules): Nope

#19 Attend a cricket game (and learn the rules): Nope

Things not on an official list but still want to try:

Think that’s enough? What’s on YOUR goals for 2013?

In looking at my list, so many things that are left involve travel. Well, I hope to get out and visit at least one new country this year but otherwise I’m going to have to find things a bit closer by to do.

#2 Swim with Whales: Technically I wouldn’t be swimming with whales but I do plan to go on a whale watching trip out of Virginia Beach in February. Hope to see a humpback on its migratory path!

#8 Sell a piece of art (and realize my childhood dream, which is #28 on the 40/40 list)

#46 Scuba Diving: Continue practicing my SCUBA skills by going at least once. Gonna use my new GoPro to capture the excitement that is the murky depths of the rock quarry.

#52 Read the Greatest Books Ever Written (#7 on the 40/40 list): I didn’t do ANY of these last year! I mostly have really long ones left so out of the 10 remaining, I’m going to tackle 2 this year. As ONE of these things to read is the ENTIRE works of Shakespeare, I also want to see 2 plays performed live.

#65  Shout ‘Drinks Are on Me!’ in a Pub or Bar (#17 on the 40/40 list): I’m waiting to go my bar on a Tuesday afternoon at 3pm. I can swing buying drinks for 5 people.

#84 Learn to Ski (#32 on the 40/40 list): I went last year but I take “learning” to mean something you do multiple times in an effort to improve. So I’m going again.

Goals from my 40 Before I’m 40 List:

#1 Be Able to Do a Pull Up: I started working seriously on this late 2012. I’m up to lifting about 90 pounds so I only have 50 more to go.

#11 Learn to Rock Climb: Continue with going to the indoor rock climbing wall but I’ve also scheduled a trip to go to Pilot Mountain for “real” rock climbing.

#12 Take a Cooking Class: I want to sign up for a Sushi making class.

#18 Watch the  Top 250 IMDB List/Watch All of the Oscar Best Picture Winners: Watch 25 this year

#25 Drink All the Beers on the GQ List: Drink 10

#31  Learn to swim: I’ve signed up for beginner lessons. No more doggie paddling for me!

#35 Visit all of the NC Breweries: I went to 13 last year but admittedly I’ve now visited all the ones near me. Travel is now required to visit the rest. Visit 7 this year

#36 Learn How to Ballroom Dance: I went for one lesson but I think I’m going to try to attend one of the dance studio’s “dance socials” to practice

From the Sports List:

#18 Attend a rugby game (and learn the rules): There are actually some local teams

#19 Attend a cricket game (and learn the rules): There’s actually a local league!

IMDB’s Top 250

I’ve referenced the IMDb Top 250 before but realized I had never really discussed it fully here on the blog. This list isn’t permanent like some others I’ve talked about before (here and here). Instead, this one fluctuates as members on IMDb vote on their favorite movies. Plus, it’s pretty dude heavy (as evidenced by the number of Westerns and super hero movies). My original goal for the year was to see 100 of the movies from the 1,001 film list but sometime over the year, I kinda put my focus on this. Even when I finish this list, there will always be other films to see as others make their way off and on the list.

The list below is from July 26, 2012 (note how high The Dark Knight Rises is) and of these 250, I’ve seen 191 (the ones I haven’t seen are in red). As of my Second Quarter Report, I had seen 182. How many have you seen?

Raleigh Skyline from the Raleigh Amphitheater

What’s New, Pussycat?

Just because I haven’t been around for the last two months doesn’t mean I haven’t been busy – Forgive me but this is going to be a marathon blog post! So…what’s new?

  • I’m now a landlord!

It was a huge deal for me to be able to buy a house at age 25 and I’ve spoken several times about how much I love my little house. But I knew I wouldn’t be there forever and when the time came, I had always planned on renting it out. I’m now living IN Raleigh, just a few minutes from Downtown and I’m loving being close to work. Plus, this is the first time I’ve lived in the “big city” so that’s been a blast too.

  • Go to a concert alone

CAKE concert at the Raleigh Amphitheater

I’ve never had a problem doing things alone. In fact, I often prefer it. I’ve never thought twice about going out to eat or going to the movies alone. I definitely prefer shopping alone. When it was announced that CAKE was coming to the Raleigh Amphitheater, I wanted to go but didn’t really know anyone else that wanted to. I didn’t know how I’d feel about going to a concert alone but it shouldn’t have surprised me when I found it to be one of the best concert experiences I’ve ever had. I arrived when I wanted to, went to the restroom when I wanted to, and left when I wanted to; I wasn’t beholden to the group’s majority vote. And the concert wasn’t sold out so I was able to sit down for much of the concert, spread out and sit back and enjoy the music of my high school years.

I’ve done little day trips by myself but now I think I’ll have to see if I can travel alone, especially internationally!

  • Visit Every NC Brewery: Big Boss

I’ve had Big Boss beers and really enjoy them. The brewery was a bit like a frat house but a cool little chill place for hanging with friends and drinking some beers. Pretty much what you want in a brewery. Seven more breweries to visit for the year.

  • Donate Blood

I’m on pace with 3 pints donated so far for the year. 3 more to go for the year. (I’ve donated 7 total pints for lifetime).

  • 40 before 40 List: #38 See a Movie in a Drive-In Movie Theater: Completed

I took advantage of The Avengers making its way to the nearby drive in.  Unfortunately, I was disappointed with my experience. After being spoiled with high-definition everything, there isn’t much to write home about in regards to the picture quality.

I’m sure back when everyone drove cars, a drive in would be the way to go. Nowadays everyone has an SUV or a mini-van and although there were signs and announcements to the contrary, every one of the behemoths kept their back hatch open, effectively blocking part of the screen. I drove into 3 different parking spots until finally finding one behind a Honda Pilot that only blocked the bottom right fifth of the screen.

Within these SUVs and mini-vans, numerous children tumbled out and quickly dispersed around the area, continuing to run, jump and yell throughout the movie like I was on the set of Lord of the Flies. Since the movie’s sound came through on a radio station rather than a little box that you attached to your window, and the fact that the night was quite cool, I was able to roll up my windows, which blocked much of this noise and distraction.

What it didn’t block was the constant flashing lights of people’s cars as they opened doors, locked doors, started cars, and turned cars off. There are so many flashing lights, beeps, and honks when you do anything to a car these days, there’s really no way to avoid this but it doesn’t make it less annoying.

So I was glad to have had the experience of a drive in movie…if only to know I never need to go back.

  • Warrior Dash #2

I enjoyed the Warrior Dash so much last August, I signed up to do it again this year. I felt the course was even better this year with many of the obstacles built into the landscape, taking advantage of the natural terrain, rather than simply building structures that could be found anywhere. However, because of the way many of the obstacles were structured, it meant for a lot of waiting and standing still while other participants made their way through.

Unfortunately, as I was heading into the last stretch with just a few obstacles to go, a problem I’ve had since middle school reared its ugly head. You see, I’ve had this undiagnosed heart problem since I was 12 where my heart, with no warning, will begin beating very fast. Like, 220-beats-a-minute-fast. The problem is, it never lasts for longer than a few minutes and by the time I get to a doctor, the EKG looks normal.

For much of my life, this has simply been a nuisance, bothering me no more than a couple times a year. But sometime this spring, despite being in the best shape of my life, it began acting up, happening every couple of weeks and becoming more worrisome. After a lot of hemming and hawing, I finally went to see a cardiologist and got outfitted with my very own heart monitor.

I had been wearing this attractive hunk of plastic and wires for two weeks when the Warrior Dash came around. As I couldn’t get it wet, I had left it in the car and now I was lying on the ground beside the race course having an episode I desperately needed to record. An EMT rushed over and at first all I could think of was finishing the race. However, I soon realized it wasn’t going away and I finally acquiesed to a ride in a gator to the medical tent.

From that point on, it was a blur of stress and worry as I desperately willed my heart to slow down. I had never had an episode in such a public way and with the threat of an ambulance ride to the emergency room, I couldn’t calm down enough. A friend managed to get my monitor from the car and we recorded my heart beat just as the guys with my ambulance arrived (Did I mention I was THIRD in line for an ambulance ride? There was another person with the same issue I had and another that had fallen into the fire and suffered serious burns, not to mention over 75 sprained ankles that had occurred in the first 4 hours of the day). They hooked me up to their super huge monitor, slipped oxygen up my nose, and then it was time to get on the stretcher for my first ever ride in an ambulance. As they were preparing an IV medication to slow my heart rate, I managed to choke while sipping on some water; while coughing and sputtering, I “converted,” making a very tired heart immediately slow down to a normal rhythm.

My cardiologist got the report and called while I was at the hospital, officially diagnosing me with supraventricular tachycardia and immediately calling in a prescription that I may now have to take for the rest of my life. While not what I had in mind for the day, I managed to get something diagnosed that had really begun to interfere with my ability to be active. While I’m not excited about taking medication, if it’s the difference between being able to live life or sit on the sidelines, I’ll do what I need to do!

———————————————————————————————————————–
So that’s what’s been going on. I still have to tell you about my first ever camping experience and some extensive hiking in the mountains over Memorial Day weekend; there’s some good photos to share AND something got checked off the 101 things to do before you die list! And I have some exciting things happening in the next couple of weeks that are GUARANTEED to provide some memorable experiences…

What’s new with you?

2012

Goals for 2012

I’m pretty pleased with what I did in 2011 but that doesn’t mean I’m slowing down any! This won’t be a big year for travel or too much adventure but there are still plenty of things for me to do!

#8 Sell a piece of art (and realize my childhood dream, which is #28 on the 40/40 list)

#46 Scuba Diving: Continue practicing my newfound SCUBA skillz by going to the rock quarry at least once.

#52 Read the Greatest Books Ever Written (#7 on the 40/40 list): I mostly have really long ones left so out of the 10 remaining, I’m going to tackle 4 this year.

#68 Save Someone’s Life (#8 on the 40/40 list): Donate 6 pints I’ve gone back and forth on this. I know they say donating blood can help save someone’s life but I guess I feel like I can’t be sure if MY blood actually saved somoene’s life. But most people seem to think this counts so let’s compromise. If I donate 5 gallons (which is 40 pints and the quickest I’d be able to accomplish that is 7 years), then can we say the likelihood of ONE of those 40 pints actually saved somebody’s life?

#84 Learn to Ski (#32 on the 40/40 list): As a hold over from the original list I had in high school, it’s high time I did something about this one.

#93.5 Get Your Name in the Ring of Honor:  I completed this goal in 2011 but I’ll have my plate unveiling this year.

Goals from my 40 Before I’m 40 List:

#1 Be Able to Do a Pull Up

#11 Learn to Rock Climb: Already have the Groupon in hand to make this happen!

#18 Watch the Top 1,001 Films: Watch 100 this year

#25 Drink All the Beers on the GQ List: Drink 20

#35 Visit all of the NC Breweries: Visit 10 this year

#36 Learn How to Ballroom Dance: Have the Groupon in hand to do this one as well! I think I’m going to try Salsa!

#37 Start Using Coupons

#38 See a Movie in a Drive-In Movie Theater: I’m putting a stipulation on this one. If they simply insist on showing family movies I’m not interested in, I’m not going to force myself to sit through some animated drivel just to check this one off. I think it would be super fantastic if they showed something like Star Wars. Could you imagine seeing that outside at a drive in movie theater? You’d really feel like you were in space!

From the Sports List:

#18 Attend a rugby game (and learn the rules): There are actually some local teams

#19 Attend a cricket game (and learn the rules): There’s actually a local league!

#24 Attend the Kentucky Derby: There is SOME talk about going this year with my good friend Jessica so hopefully this is happening this year.

Also, not officially on any lists but I’m hoping they do the “Over the Edge” event this year so that I can repel down the side of a building and I have also never been to a tea room and I want to try that out.

Think that’s enough? What’s on YOUR goals for 2012?

Thing to Do #19 (40/40): Watch AFI’s Top 100 films

COMPLETED!

I’ve now seen all the films on the American Film Institute’s Top 100 Films list. Found some that I liked and some that I’ll never see again. Some I had seen through the completion of the film list from the original 101 Things to Do Before You Die list.

Below are short reviews of the remaining the seven films I watched to finish off the list and below that is the entire list for your reference, some of which have my personal opinion reflected next to the title.

Sullivan’s Travels

This is exactly what a “classic” movie should be. A cute love story with pretty lead actors, a little slapsticky comedy, a poignant message, and a happy ending.

Intolerance

It took me five times to get all the way through this epic silent film. This is the hardest I’ve ever worked to get through a film. And I’ve watched Eraserhead.

Nashville

A very long and slow and LOUD movie. It’s a Robert Altman film, so he likes the multistoryed plot. But if you stick with it long enough, all the different plot lines weave together and it slowly draws you in enough for you to want to figure out what happens with each character.

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

Ok, I’m not going to lie. This is a challenging film. But if you can push through it, I think you’ll be pleased. All the actors are just really so strong (they were all nominated for an Oscar with Elizabeth Taylor and Sandy Dennis winning), and considering it’s two hours of dialogue, and loud, screaming dialogue at that, they’d have to be at the top of their game. It DEMANDS an emotional response from you, whether you say you liked it or not by the end.

City Lights

Of all the Charlie Chaplin films I’ve seen, I liked this one the best. It had the sweetest story and, for whatever reason, he seemed a little less silly. The boxing scene was my favorite. The film is easy to watch and makes you smile.

King Kong

I can admit that for 1933, these special effects must have just been amazing. Because even in 2011, they weren’t THAT bad, especially given all the overdone CGI I’ve seen in some movies lately. I knew the story and had certainly seen the remakes, but I could appreciate this original’s place in film history.

Shane

This was ok. The sound was a little off so I had difficulty following what was being said. The little boy was a little annoying and so was the mother by the end. I dunno. Meh.

In a Job Like Yours, Even When It’s Finished, There’s Always One More Thing to Do

I’m sucking it up big time on reading so far this year.  Well into the third month I’m still working on my second book and neither are even on my “Official Book List.”  At least I’m kicking ass at watching movies.  In a battle against my DVR’s dwindling memory, I went on a film watching rampage again this past weekend.  Instead of enjoying weather in the 70s I opted to stay in and watch 3+ hour long epics.

The Way We Were While not necessarily on many official film lists, it’s still a large part of pop culture that I felt I needed to watch for myself.  I guess I didn’t have high expectations for it because it completely took me off guard with its realistic and painful exploration of the relationship between Barbara Streisand and Robert Redford.  I truly found myself with a strong emotional reaction to their eventual demise, which for me is the best litmus test for film engagement.

The Portrait of Dorian Gray I read the book as part of the “Official Book List” and as Oscar Wilde’s only novel, it was a little arduous to read.  I think plays out better theatrically, given Oscar Wilde’s dialogue.  I don’t know if I’m a perv or if everyone thinks this but I was incredibly curious to know exactly what sins he had committed but that’s a great literary device – given sparse details, people will always be able to dream up much worse than even the author had intended.  And decades before Spielberg’s colorized red dress in Schindler’s List, Albert Lewin used color to both underline the beauty of the original painting and the horror it later became.

The Bridge On the River Kwai Of all the films I watched this weekend, I think this was my favorite and that completely surprised me.  I guess I had preconceived notions about the plot, based on years of war movies playing in the background of my youth.  But this particular war movie was unconventional at best; dealing far less with guns, bombs, and front line strategies, River Kwai handles the human side of war and the struggle to maintain dignity and pride.  The title of this post is a quote from the movie.  I hear it every day on the local sports radio I listen to; it was repeated several times throughout and I think it’s a perfect motto for life.  Alec Guinness was point-perfect, as always; a part of his monologue the night before the bridge opens is below.  I think these thoughts cross everyone’s mind from time to time, especially that of a life lister:

“But there are times when suddenly you realize you’re nearer the end than the beginning. And you wonder, you ask yourself, what the sum total of your life represents. What difference your being there at any time made to anything. Hardly made any difference at all, really, particularly in comparison with other men’s careers. I don’t know whether that kind of thinking’s very healthy; but I must admit I’ve had some thoughts on those lines from time to time.”

Lawrence of Arabia Just because a movie is long doesn’t necessarily make it great.  This was ok.  Not what I expected and my attention definitely started to wane long before the 2.5 hour mark and I still had another hour to go!  I personally didn’t feel connected to the plot and definitely didn’t feel it warranted a 3.5 hour exploration.  And, while I first liked Peter O’Toole’s T.E. Lawrence, by the end I was confused by the turn of the character and was turned off by the movie over all.

The Best Years of Our Lives Another 3+ hour film that I foolishly watched right after Lawrence.  Apparently I am a glutton for punishment.  I enjoyed this film although, again, there was absolutely no reason for it be as long as it was.  The plot would have not suffered at all with a little more editing and better pacing.  Regardless, it was an unanticipated look into the lives of three soldiers returning home from WWII.  As long as men have gone off to war, they’ve been returning to a home where things have changed and dealing with both physical and emotional scars.  This was probably a groundbreaking film in a time much different from ours today with regular coverage and public discussion of PTSD.

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre Humphrey Bogart was a leading man and as such, was often the hero.  Not necessarily the most handsome and usually a hero with dark edges or less than completely pure motives, but he was still usually someone to admire.  In this film, he had few redeemable qualities and it was an interesting departure.  I enjoyed this movie and I was excited to finally hear the whole ”We ain’t got no stinkin’ badges” dialogue.

Cabaret After some pretty heavy themes in the films I watched prior, Cabaret was gladly welcomed as lighter fare (and it’s not that light).  Another cult classic, it’s so much fun to come across lines or scenes that have been duplicated elsewhere and finally make the connection to the original.  I’ve not seen much with Liza Minnelli but I think she has a new fan!  And does anyone else think Anne Hathaway looks a lot like her?  I was thinking about this movie days later and besides River Kwai, it was one of the best I saw this weekend.

Have you seen these films?  Liked them, didn’t like them, thought I was wrong to not like Lawrence of Arabia?

Why I Don’t Like David Lynch

I have a theory.  I firmly believe that film critics get together and jointly choose to proclaim that some films/directors are “Genius!”  They don’t actually believe this themselves, but the film in question is just strange enough, tinged with enough pseudo-allegory and metaphorical BS, and insists on itself so strongly, they feel that it must be art, influential, a tour de force!  They don’t really like it but they think if they tell everyone else this stuff, it’ll hide the fact that they don’t really get it either.

That’s what I feel like David Lynch has done to film critics.  At some point, they all got together and said, “What the Hell is this crap?  It’s so surreal, it seems to include meaningful imagery, and I feel like it’s trying to make some kind of important statement.  Let’s prank everyone and declare it’s the best movie of the decade!  And then we’ll laugh at them when they agree and discuss it within academia for its Important Contribution to the legacy of film.”

If you haven’t gathered by now, I’m not a fan of David Lynch.

I DID like The Straight Story (Lynch directed but did not write) and The Elephant Man was compelling (Lynch directed and wrote the screenplay but managed to contain his craziness and write a linear plot).  On my “must see films” list were 3 Lynch films: The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, and Eraserhead.  Blue Velvet was just…weird.  And seemingly weird for weird sake.

And Eraserhead.  What do I say about Eraserhead?

It was the worst movie I’ve ever seen.  Each second of the 89 minute long movie was an eternity.  The entire time I watched it, I kept repeating, “What the frack is going on?!”

Mulholland Drive was proclaimed to be one of the best movies of the aughts.  Miranda even included it on her Top 100 Movies of the Aughts list.   It was surrealist like so many other Lynch films, and it was actually a little scary (not a good idea to watch by yourself home alone for scaredy cats like me).  Compared to Eraserhead and Blue Velvet, it was certainly more watchable and a little easier to understand but I still didn’t like it.  I guess I just don’t get the point of writing a film and telling people to guess what its supposed to mean.

So am I philistine for not appreciating David Lynch or will you join me in admitting that the emperor is naked?

Things to Do in 2011

Last year was a pretty full year:  I traveled to  New Zealand, ran a Marathon, went sky diving, and got into the Guinness World Record book by skinny dipping.  I wonder what is in store for this year?  Well, here’s some ideas off of the 101  Things to Do Before You Die list:

#1 Write a Novel:  I started on this goal last year and just plan to continue to work on this again this year.

#11 Visit Every State:  I know this is terribly exciting but we have big plans to visit Pennsylvania this year.  I’ve driven through it but have never really DONE anything in PA.  We plan to visit Hershey for all the things you do there (including a nearby Zorbing course), visit Fallingwater, and then head to Altoona, PA for Lakemont Park, the home of Leap the Dips, the oldest roller coaster in the world!  (It’s an “also-ran” on the Roller Coaster list)

#16 Get into the Guinness World Book of Records:  I accomplished this already during the World Skinny Dip Challenge in July 2010.  However, that is a group entry and while it counts, I really want my NAME in the book.  So I’m going to continue my goal of being the largest blood donor.  So far I’m up to 5 pints over my lifetime.

#46 Scuba Diving/#87 Conquer Your Fear: My fear is water.  I plan to learn to SCUBA to officially say I’ve conquered my fear. (This is also #9 and #10 on my “40/40″ list)

#52 Read the Greatest Books Ever Written: I only have 11 left on the list, but this includes the works of Shakespeare and most of the others that are left are LOOOONG.  So we’ll just put the number at 8 this year.

#52.1 Shakespeare Reading Challenge: I will attempt to reach “Henry V” level by reading 12 plays this year.

#89 Learn to Cook:  Officially this one in the book is “Throw Away the Instant Noodles,” implying to learn to cook and stop relying on redi-made dishes.  To count this one as done, I plan to make a meal once a week, all year, from scratch.  No pre made anything (except pasta, I’m not making pasta).  AND I’ll do a different recipe each time.  So 52 different meals.  This one is going to be tough.

#93.5 Get Your Name in the Ring of Honor:  I’m currently up to 125 over almost two years working on this one.  Ready to just get this one done so I’m trying to complete it in 2011! (#16 on my “40/40″ list)

#105 Krispy Kreme Challenge: I’m DONE with serious running but I’ll still do fun runs.  And this one should be the funnest. We’re also signed up for the Spartan Race for May.  (both are #22 on the “40/40″ list)

Goals from my 40 Before I’m 40 List:

#6 Start Saving for Retirement

#19 Watch AFI’s 100 Best Films: I’ve only got 34 left.  Let’s see if I can get through them all by the end of the year.

#28  Sell a piece of art (and realize my childhood dream, which is #8 on the 101 list)

#38 See a Movie in a Drive-In Movie Theater

Not crazy adventurous like last year but still pretty ambitious!  What are your goals for 2011?

Thing to Do #57: See the All Time Greatest Films (or just of the past decade)

To celebrate the end of the decade (I’m calling it the end although I know that 2010 is supposedly still part of this decade),  Miranda shared a list that hails from United Kingdom’s Times Online as the 100 Best Films of the Decade.  As this list comes from a UK news outlet, its heavy on the Brit films (although I guess we here in America tend to choose our own, but that’s mostly because we’re more awesome!  Sorry, arrogant Americanism showing through).  In truth, its mostly just more international.

For the most part, the ones that I have seen (especially the dramas) I thought were terribly overrated and really didn’t like.  As for the comedies on the list, they chose a lot of quirky ones that have a similar comedy style-must be the style that appeals to the Brits.  I’ve only seen 41 of 100-ones that I’ve seen have an X beside it.
