Another Little One in My Life

First of all, how cute is that little face!?  Recognizing, of course, that I’m 100% biased.  My brother and his wife had their son Jack Yates this past Thursday, making me an aunt again.  Their daughter Zoe is 16 mos. and I also have a niece through my husband’s brother.

You would think that by my mother getting a new grandchild, this would sate her appetite for babies, but instead it seems to only increase her interest.  And honestly, we’re getting to that point I guess.  I’m almost 31 and Alex just turned 38.  We can’t just keep saying “2 or 3 years” as people have started adding things up and have begun to realize we’ve been saying “2 or 3 years” now for 2 or 3 years.

Have a baby is actually #101 on my 101 Things to Do Before You Die list.  And be rest assured, when it is actually decided that we’re going to start “trying,” you will not be told.  Somewhere along the way, having a baby became a very public thing.  Did people forget HOW you get babies?  You are essentially asking me about my sex life.  And God help me when I actually get pregnant-the personal questions about bathroom habits and having complete strangers touching my stomach.  Eck.

So while this event may account some for my absence this week, it was also partly a self-imposed sabbatical.  Over the past two months, I’ve slowly come to the realization that blogging (writing posts, commenting on other blogs, etc) had slowly taken over my life.  Following 87 blogs that are regularly updated in addition to trying to do 2-3 posts a week meant I was blogging about 2 or 3 hours every night.  I’m trying to cut down on the number of blogs I follow, or at the very least, not feel compelled to read and comment on every one.  And I didn’t feel at all guilty for not posting anything for 5 days.  So expect fewer posts.

After all, for a blog about living, I can’t spend all my time writing!

So, to have babies or to not have babies, where do you stand on that question?  How much time do you spend blogging?  And feel free to tell me that my nephew is completely wonderful. :)

2010 My Blog in Review

I got a report from WordPress about how my blog did in 2010 and I thought it was kinda cool.  Plus, there was a button to click to turn the report into a post and I thought this was an easy way to get another post on the books for January :)

The stats helper monkeys at WordPress.com mulled over how this blog did in 2010, and here’s a high level summary of its overall blog health:

About 3 million people visit the Taj Mahal every year. This blog was viewed about 47,000 times in 2010. If it were the Taj Mahal, it would take about 6 days for that many people to see it.

In 2010, there were 108 new posts, growing the total archive of this blog to 197 posts. There were 176 pictures uploaded, taking up a total of 92mb. That’s about 3 pictures per week.

The busiest day of the year was October 8th with 894 views. The most popular post that day was Thing to Do #16: Get into the Guinness Book of World Records.

Where did they come from?

The top referring sites in 2010 were networkedblogs.com, facebook.com, mail.yahoo.com, mail.live.com, and 101thingstodo.co.uk.

Some visitors came searching, mostly for piercings, 101 things to do before you die, piercing, things to do before you die, and 100 things to do before you graduate college.

Weird Ways People Have Found My Blog

Wordle: 101 Things to Do Before You Die
I’m always curious to see what searches led people to my blog, and usually its the obvious ones: “101 things to do before you die” or searches for places I’ve been or things I’ve done like “New Zealand” or “Smuggle Alcohol Onto Cruise Ships.”   The top searches that bring people to my site are:

  • Piercings/Body Piercings/Piercings for Girls/Back Piercings (9,894)
  • 101 Things to Do Before You Die/Things to Do Before You Die (2,482)
  • Police Line Up (177)
  • 100 Things to Do Before You Graduate College (272)
  • Artist Palette (254)
  • White Water Rafting (87)
  • Postsecret Postcards (72)

Apparently I need to write more posts about piercings.  And although these are the overall top ways people have found my blog since the beginning, typically nowadays the way people find me is searching for “skinny dipping,” since that’s the number one search since about July.

It’s the strange searches that make me laugh and think “Why did someone even SEARCH for this!?”  Here’s a list of some of my favorites:

  • Fat Feet
  • How often should I eat Krispy Kreme
  • Jess is drunk and has water in her ear
  • Did my brother eat a koeksister?
  • Beach Fence
  • Did you die?  Did you see swordfish?
  • Tickled Underwater
  • Castles in the United States
  • Cooked Feet
  • Baseball Stadium Spectators
  • Orange Running Skirt
  • Hate Bikram
  • Dogging South Africa
  • Mississippi Pothole

How do people find your blog?  What’s the craziest thing people have searched for to find your blog?

Interesting stats about blogs

Just a random post about blogging in general.

I enjoy writing the blog sometimes just as much as doing the list.  When I’m in the middle of getting something accomplished, I immediately think “I need to take a photo of this for my blog!”  I’m pleased with the number of views I get on my blog each day (average 125 daily/3,500 a month) and appreciate my faithful commenters (Thanks Miranda, Gina and Chris!)  Although I follow many other blogs, I’m mostly just a lurker, so I can’t get too upset that I mostly have lurkers myself.  And I try not to be so vain about my blog, but I’m dissapointed that my blog doesn’t show up in a Google search for “101 Things to Do Before You Die” until the 2nd page.  Oh, well…I’ll just have to be patient.

So when I found this infographic, I thought it was interesting.  I was suprised that so many bloggers are men, considering most of the blogs I follow are written by women (but of course, that’s where my interests lie!).  Other than being a female blogger, I fit the profile in most every other way:  I AM a college grad, live in the US, write to blog about myself, post about 2-3 times a week, and spend about 2 hours a week blogging.  I have met at least one person through my blog and I actually think that since I started blogging, I became even more obsessive about the list than I was before.

blogosphere

So whatcha think?  Do you blog?  If you do, do you fit the profile?  Or do you think that people who write blogs are all vain and self-centered (and if you do think that, who cares what you think?  I’m too busy writing my next post!  Ha!)
