Goals for 2012

I’m pretty pleased with what I did in 2011 but that doesn’t mean I’m slowing down any! This won’t be a big year for travel or too much adventure but there are still plenty of things for me to do!

#8 Sell a piece of art (and realize my childhood dream, which is #28 on the 40/40 list)

#46 Scuba Diving: Continue practicing my newfound SCUBA skillz by going to the rock quarry at least once.

#52 Read the Greatest Books Ever Written (#7 on the 40/40 list): I mostly have really long ones left so out of the 10 remaining, I’m going to tackle 4 this year. As ONE of these things to read is the ENTIRE works of Shakespeare, I also want to see 2 plays performed live.

#65  Shout ‘Drinks Are on Me!’ in a Pub or Bar (#17 on the 40/40 list): I’m waiting to go my bar on a Tuesday afternoon at 3pm. I can swing buying drinks for 5 people.

#68 Save Someone’s Life (#8 on the 40/40 list): Donate 6 pints I’ve gone back and forth on this. I know they say donating blood can help save someone’s life but I guess I feel like I can’t be sure if MY blood actually saved somoene’s life. But most people seem to think this counts so let’s compromise. If I donate 5 gallons (which is 40 pints and the quickest I’d be able to accomplish that is 7 years), then can we say the likelihood of ONE of those 40 pints actually saved somebody’s life?

#84 Learn to Ski (#32 on the 40/40 list): As a hold over from the original list I had in high school, it’s high time I did something about this one.

#93.5 Get Your Name in the Ring of Honor:  I completed this goal in 2011 but I’ll have my plate unveiling this year.

Goals from my 40 Before I’m 40 List:

#1 Be Able to Do a Pull Up

#11 Learn to Rock Climb: Already have the Groupon in hand to make this happen!

#18 Watch the Top 1,001 Films: Watch 100 this year

#25 Drink All the Beers on the GQ List: Drink 20

#35 Visit all of the NC Breweries: Visit 10 this year

#36 Learn How to Ballroom Dance: Have the Groupon in hand to do this one as well! I think I’m going to try Salsa!

#37 Start Using Coupons

#38 See a Movie in a Drive-In Movie Theater: I’m putting a stipulation on this one. If they simply insist on showing family movies I’m not interested in, I’m not going to force myself to sit through some animated drivel just to check this one off. I think it would be super fantastic if they showed something like Star Wars. Could you imagine seeing that outside at a drive in movie theater? You’d really feel like you were in space!

From the Sports List:

#18 Attend a rugby game (and learn the rules): There are actually some local teams

#19 Attend a cricket game (and learn the rules): There’s actually a local league!

#24 Attend the Kentucky Derby: There is SOME talk about going this year with my good friend Jessica so hopefully this is happening this year.

Also, not officially on any lists but I’m hoping they do the “Over the Edge” event this year so that I can repel down the side of a building and I have also never been to a tea room and I want to try that out.

Think that’s enough? What’s on YOUR goals for 2012?

Final Results 2011

This has been quite the year, having very little to do with the list. But despite things going on in my personal life, I still managed to get some things done on the 101 Things to Do Before You Die list. May not have been as exciting as 2010 but still managed to tick things off the list!

#1 Write a Novel:  Big FAIL on the National Novel Writing Month again. I feel like I keep coming up with excuses but seriously I just had WAY too much going on in November. I said this last year but maybe I just need to pick another month.

#11 Visit Every State:  Original goal was to go to Pennsylvania but I’m not going to complain about checking Hawaii off the list instead!

#16 Get into the Guinness World Book of Records: I haven’t donated blood all year so epic fail on that. HOWEVER…AANR didn’t try to break 2010′s Skinny Dip Record, so that still stands!

#46 Scuba Diving/#87 Conquer Your Fear:  COMPLETED! (Well, at least the SCUBA diving portion. Time will tell about whether I’ve conquered my fear of water)

#52 Read the Greatest Books Ever Written: The only one I read this year was The Master and Margarita. I spent all of my time working on the Global Challenge. But I also read Fantastic Mr. Fox, Rabbit, Run, Mildred Pierce, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and the latest Sookie book. 13 books total for the year. Not my best effort but better than most, I guess!

#52.1 Shakespeare Reading Challenge: Originally I was going to attempt to actually see some plays performed but my schedule never worked out. I really haven’t put any energy into this one :(

#52.2 Global Reading Challenge: COMPLETED! I read Winesburg, Ohio (North America), Evil Angels (Australiasia), The Good Earth (Asia), Out of Africa (Africa), The Master and Margarita (Europe), The Road (Future) and Love in the Time in Cholera (South America).

#89 Learn to Cook:  COMPLETED! (Sorry, I haven’t posted about my last 5 recipes yet. I’ll do that in the next couple of weeks).

#93.5 Get Your Name in the Ring of Honor:  COMPLETED! Planning on hosting my plate party in 2012.

#105 Krispy Kreme Challenge: COMPLETED!  Warrior Dash: COMPLETED!

Goals from my 40 Before I’m 40 List:

#6 Start Saving for Retirement: COMPLETED!

#19 Watch AFI’s 100 Best Films: COMPLETED!

#20 Sing Karaoke: COMPLETED!

#28  Sell a piece of art (and realize my childhood dream, which is #8 on the 101 list): FAIL!

#38 See a Movie in a Drive-In Movie Theater: Anytime I thought about it and had a free weekend, they weren’t showing anything I wanted to see. Pushed off to 2012.

#39 Lose 20 Pounds: COMPLETED!

Not on the list for this year’s goals but still to be noted:

On the official list but not planned at the beginning of the year:

  • #7: Eat Exotic Foods: I ate Haggis at the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games and bugs at BugFest
  • #98: Go on a Demonstration: COMPLETED!
  • #22: Go up in a Hot Air Balloon: COMPLETED!

So in 2011 I completed 11 of my goals, 4 of which are from the original 101 things to do before you die list, which brings the total to 38 things completely done and 13 things partially done. Not too shabby if I do say so myself. And I’m thinking 2012 is going to be even better!

So how did you do with your goals for 2011?  What do you have planned for 2012?

Third Quarter Results 2011

I have to admit, it’s really gratifying to look back on where I started with this list and see how much I’ve accomplished. When people ask me “What’s next on your list?’ and they expect some big adventure, I have to admit that I’m really mostly just down to travel at this point (by and large). But, never fear, I’m always adding new adventures to the list-I’ll never run out of things to do!

#1 Write a Novel:  Nada, yet. Big plans to do the National Novel Writing Month in November.

#11 Visit Every State:  Managed to cross Hawaii off the list.

#16 Get into the Guinness World Book of Records: I haven’t donated blood all year so epic fail on that. Plus, I bought the Record Book for last year because I thought I’d be in it for the Skinny Dip but it wasn’t included. It doesn’t mean I’m not in it, it just means the Skinny Dip record is in the BIG official books that Libraries get, not the fun little one available for simple people like me. :(

#46 Scuba Diving/#87 Conquer Your Fear:  COMPLETED! (Well, at least the SCUBA diving portion. Time will tell about whether I’ve conquered my fear of water)

#52 Read the Greatest Books Ever Written: I spent all summer on The Master and Margarita but I’ve mostly been working on the Global Challenge. I’ve also read Fantastic Mr. Fox, Rabbit, Run, Mildred Pierce, and the latest Sookie book. I’m really not doing very well with reading this year compared to my last few years.

#52.1 Shakespeare Reading Challenge: Originally I was going to attempt to actually see some plays performed but my scheduled never worked out. I really haven’t put any energy into this one :(

#52.2 Global Reading Challenge: So far I’ve read Winesburg, Ohio (North America), Evil Angels (Australiasia), The Good Earth (Asia), Out of Africa (Africa), The Master and Margarita (Europe), and The Road (Future). All that’s left is Love in the Time in Cholera (South America), which I’m currently reading.

#89 Learn to Cook:  I was working toward 52 recipes this year and I’m currently up to 47.

#93.5 Get Your Name in the Ring of Honor:  COMPLETED this one too! We’re planning the “plate party” as we speak.

#105 Krispy Kreme Challenge: COMPLETED!  Warrior Dash: COMPLETED!

Goals from my 40 Before I’m 40 List:

#6 Start Saving for Retirement: COMPLETED!

#19 Watch AFI’s 100 Best Films: I only have Shane and Intolerance left.

#20 Sing Karaoke: COMPLETED!

#28  Sell a piece of art (and realize my childhood dream, which is #8 on the 101 list): Nada, so far.

#38 See a Movie in a Drive-In Movie Theater: I’ve been making excuses on this one. Anytime I’ve been free, the Drive-In movie theater closest to us wasn’t showing something I wanted to see. Hopefully the stars will align and I’ll get both a free weekend and a good movie.

#39 Lose 20 Pounds: COMPLETED!

Not on the list for this year’s goals but I also joined the Bone Marrow Registry, so between that and donating blood, I’m working on #68 Save Someone’s Life. I visited Savannah and I saw UNC play (and win) in the NCAA tournament. We went to a Ren Faire and I also got a star named after me, which could fulfill #94 Get Something Named After Me (I’m still holding out hope for a street or a building or something.) Also, while SCUBA diving in Hawaii, I saw a Sea Turtle in the wild; that’s not on the “official” list but still cool.

We went to the VA Derby where I was in the top 10 finalists for the hat competition. I ate Haggis at the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games and bugs at BugFest (both part of #7 on the 101 list). I went on a demonstration (#98), Hot Air Ballooning! (#22 on the 101 list) and visited the Biltmore Estate.

So how are you doing with your goals for 2011?  Only 3 more months until 2012!

Second Quarter Results 2011

I’ve got one more post on Hawaii but I’ll take a quick break to update you on the first half of the year’s goals. It’s funny to think that at the beginning of the year I didn’t think I would have much going on this year. I’ve done a LOT!

#1 Write a Novel:  Nada, yet. Big plans to do the National Novel Writing Month in November.

#11 Visit Every State:  Originally the plan was that we would go to Pennsylvania but that got scrapped when I got a new job without vacation. But then Alex had to go to Hawaii for work and I decided to tag along!

#16 Get into the Guinness World Book of Records:  Working on being the world’s largest blood donor.  Between being on antibiotics and having a low iron count, I still haven’t donated this year yet.  So far I’m up to 6 pints over my lifetime.

#46 Scuba Diving/#87 Conquer Your Fear:  COMPLETED! (Well, at least the SCUBA diving portion. Time will tell about whether I’ve conquered my fear of water)

#52 Read the Greatest Books Ever Written: I’m working on The Master and Margarita right now but I’ve mostly been working on the Global Challenge. I’ve also read Fantastic Mr. Fox, Rabbit, Run and the latest Sookie book.

#52.1 Shakespeare Reading Challenge: I’m supposed to be reading 12 plays this year but I’ve got nothing yet.

#52.2 Global Reading Challenge: So far I’ve read Winesburg, Ohio (North America), Evil Angels (Australiasia), The Good Earth (Asia), and Out of Africa (Africa) as part of the challenge. The Master and Margarita counts for Europe and then all I have to read is The Road (Future) and Love in the Time in Cholera (South America).

#89 Learn to Cook:  So far I’ve done 32 recipes (Look for a coming post about the last 4 I’ve done).  That’s a little better than one a week so I’m doing really well with this goal.

#93.5 Get Your Name in the Ring of Honor:  I’m currently up to 174.  My new job is only one block from the Flying Saucer and I’ve gone there after work a number of times for a pint.  I’m getting this one done this year!

#105 Krispy Kreme Challenge: COMPLETED!  We’re also signed up for the Warrior Dash for August.

Goals from my 40 Before I’m 40 List:

#6 Start Saving for Retirement: COMPLETED!

#19 Watch AFI’s 100 Best Films: One thing I HAVE been doing is watching films (for proof visit here, here, and here). I only have 20 left.

#20 Sing Karaoke: COMPLETED!

#28  Sell a piece of art (and realize my childhood dream, which is #8 on the 101 list): Nada, so far.

#38 See a Movie in a Drive-In Movie Theater: No plans yet

#39 Lose 20 Pounds: So far I’ve lost 13.4 pounds by using Weight Watchers!

So how are you doing with your goals for 2011?  Is the year flying by for you too?

Thing to Do #88: Get Married Unusually

On June 6, 2009 at 3:30pm Pacific/6:30pm Eastern, yours truly went where so many have gone before her: down the aisle in a Vegas Chapel.  Now, I realize that the Thing to Do is get married unusually but for me, getting married in Vegas IS unusual.  So what if over 100,000 weddings take place there a year (the second largest destination after Istanbul, Turkey)?  For a gal raised in a Southern Baptist church where they don’t believe in drinking OR dancing at weddings (or any other time for that matter), doing Vegas is wild and crazy for me.

Another thing that made this wedding unusual was that while we had 25 friends and family with us for the ceremony in Vegas, friends and family back home in North Carolina (and elsewhere along the East Coast) were able to view the wedding via webcam.  When I returned, I realized Richard Horne, the author of the list, had posted the ceremony video link on his blog as well, sharing my “unusual” wedding with all of his contacts as well.  He joined the club a week later, getting married unusually himself!  http://design-monkey.blogspot.com/2009/06/1011-ttd-no-88-get-married-unusually.html

So how did everything go?

It started on the plane on the way out there.  We left Raleigh at 9:00am and although it was WAY before any time I have ever started drinking, most of our friends were buzzed by the time we landed.  The drinking continued as we made our way to the hotel, Bud Light being available in the limo ride to Mandalay Bay.  We stopped off quickly to have a group shot in front of the Vegas Welcome sign.

Alex and I had to run “errands” upon arriving in Vegas – getting the Marriage License and picking up his tux.  Just in case you were wondering, the Las Vegas Marriage License Bureau is open from 8:00am-Midnight.  I think it would be fun to go by at 11:30pm and see who have decided in their drunken haze to get married to the guy/girl they just met a couple of hours ago.  By the time we completed our errands, it was time to freshen up and meet the group to go see the Cirque de Soleil show Ka.  It should be noted now that while Alex and I were running around, the group continued to drink and some were having difficulty standing.

After the show, we moved on to Old Vegas and I got to gamble a little bit.  I like Roulette.  I quicky doubled my money and should have walked away, but I was still in the mood to play.  When I returned to the amount I started with, I cashed out.  So they let me play for free for an hour and half.

Although having gone to bed well past midnight Vegas time, Alex and I both woke up the next morning at 6:30am (9:30am EST).  He went to the gym and I started preparing for the Pool Day.  We had a Cabana reserved by the pool and I wanted to get there early.  It was actually quite windy, which I had not prepared for, and apparently Vegas was having a “cold snap” while we were there; the weather was pleasant and in the low-80s.

I set about trying to reserve lounge chairs near the cabana and was successful in throwing towels on 14 chairs, but soon found this was more trouble than it was worth.  Although we had the cabana as early as 9am, most people were sleeping in, getting breakfast, and doing their own thing.  In the meantime, I was having to increasingly fight for the chairs as the pool got more and more crowded.  After having a slight run in with some very unpleasant BEE-OTCHES, I gave up trying to reserve the chairs.  Eventually most of our friends showed up around 1pm; by that time there being only 5 of the original 14 left.

Ghostbar Ghostbar at The Palms

That night it was the plan to have bachelor/bachelorette parties.  The girls were going to N9Ne Steakhouse at the Palms, to be followed by drinks and dancing at the clubs of the Palms.  Not only did friends attend, but also Alex’s mother, two aunts, and two sisters joined in – 12 of us in all.  Dinner was fabulous and afterwards, we made our way to the Ghostbar.  The Ghostbaris high atop one of the two towers of the Palms hotel and the view was spectacular.  I could have stayed here all night but the girls were in the mood to dance and the Ghostbar wasn’t really a dancing kind of club.  We moved the festivities to Moon which was interesting, but soon became so crowded, dancing consisted of bobbing your head.

My feet were tired, I was getting crushed by people, and I was getting married the next day.  I called it a night around 12:30am.  Alex came in around 4:00am and proceeded to tell me all about his night (seemingly unaware that I had been in the middle of doing something else – sleeping).

We both awoke again the next morning at 6:30am, although I managed to roll over and sleep a bit longer.  I had a hair appointment at 12 noon and Lydia, my maid of honor, met me there.  I had had my hairdresser here in North Carolina write down exactly what we had done in our “dry run” and even took photos.  I showed the Vegas hairdressers and they did a good job.  One thing I had not counted on, though, was the fact that I was in the land of dry air where curls stay intact.  Here in North Carolina’s humidity, I can put all the product in my hair that I want to; the curls fall out in 30 minutes.  So my hair stayed in little ringlets, all the way through till the next day.

I returned to the room to find Alex back in bed.  Alex is 7 years my senior and in his “old age,” he seems to have lost his ability to bounce back after a hard night of drinking.  I had underlined to both him and his friends that I truly did not care what he did during his bachelor party, only that he not drink too much to warrant the guaranteed hangover the next day.  Alas, here he was, 2 hours before his wedding, and he was trying to sleep off a hangover.

I was to report to the Chapel 45 minutes prior to the service; he was supposed to be there at 3:00.  Our wedding package included a bottle of champagne, which Lydia and I were able to almost consume in our time waiting in the dressing room.  The time leading up to the wedding was filled with wedding people flitting in and out with flowers, papers to sign, tying bows, etc.  When they came to get Lydia, that was the first, and only, time I freaked a bit.  It had not occurred to me that I would be left alone at any point, so when they said, “Lydia, its time.”  I yelled out, “NO!  Lydia!  Don’t leave!”  They let her stay another minute, but then they took her, leaving me in the room with only my thoughts.  Tears lept to my eyes and I quickly willed them away (I couldn’t mess up my makeup!) and got myself together.

They came to get me and sure enough, just like in the Wedding Planner with J-Lo, all the wedding people had little bugs in their ears.  When they placed me in front of the doors, just-so, they announced to the someone “We have the bride.”  It would have been awesome if she had said “The bride has landed.”

The doors open and I almost burst into tears again (this time because of happiness, not because of freaking out) but I again will them away, this time by laughing.  Its my coping mechanism-laughing or making jokes.  I remembered just in time to wave at the camera since I know people, especially my parents, were watching back home.

The wedding ceremony was up for a couple of months after the wedding. I will add this commentary.  When it got to the part in the vows where Alex says “and all my worldly possessions,” the camera is on his face.  If you could see my face, you’d see me make a face like “Oh Yeah!”-the people that could see me started laughing, which you can hear in the video.  You can also hear Lydia say “Sweet!”

Also, Alex looks super serious the whole time; most people just thought he was nervous.  The truth is, he was concentrating on not throwing up on me.  He commented afterwards that he was surprised by how jovial I seemed to be-again, just my coping mechanism.

Afterwards, we took a bizillion photos.  And then we met the group at RM Moonen’s Seafood at Mandalay Bay.  Everyone seemed to be impressed by the food, commenting that the steaks were even better than the ones we had had the night before at N9ne Steakhouse (I wouldn’t know; I had the crab cakes, which were the best I’ve ever had).  The server dude was awesome, bringing me champagne (even though it wasn’t “included” in our dinner plan).  As we were leaving, he even gave me a glass “to go”-upon seeing it, the bartender took it and poured it out, saying that as it was my special day, I deserved better than that, and proceeded to pour me a better champagne.  I was impressed and grateful but there was no reason to pour out the first glass; I had a perfectly good stomach he could have poured it out in.

View from MIX 6 View from MIX Lounge

Alex and I returned briefly to the room so that he could change into more comfortable shoes (I had already changed into flip flops, which garnered some odd looks, but I didn’t care.  My feet hurt.)  We were tempted to just stay in the room-we were exhausted, but made our way to the MIX lounge.  We had a large area all to ourselves and the view from the balcony was awesome (although I may say that the Ghostbar’s view was even better).  Even the toilet in the ladies room had a view.

Because everyone had been drinking since early Thursday morning, I think most of our friends had had about enough by Saturday night.  However, we had 6 bottles of liquor we had to drink and we were not making much of a dent.  So what is the classy thing to do?  Pour the liquor into water bottles and smuggle them back home in our luggage.  (Two years later we still have the bottle of Bombay Sapphire). Not to worry, we took care of the two bottles of Vodka and the one bottle of Crown.

Minus 5.2 Minus 5 Ice Bar

The next day, Sunday, was my first day I felt free enough to truly enjoy myself and explore Vegas.  Most of our friends were leaving that day and so Alex and I walked the strip.  We rode the roller coaster at New York, New York (didn’t get a chance to do the one at the Stratosphere), saw the Bellagio fountains and the interior “gardens” of the Bellagio.  We also went to this bar at Mandalay Bay called Minus 5 Ice Bar.  The gimmick is that everything in the lounge is made entirely from ice; the walls, the seats, the tables, ice sculptures (including ice chandeliers), and best of all, the glasses!  We upgraded to the fur coats and had to carefully hold our ice glasses with both hands and place them on coasters, lest they slip off of the ice tables.  The drinks were yummy and Alex and I both thought the experience was one of the highlights of the trip (you know, other than the whole getting married thing).  Afterwards, we finally got to gamble a bit.  I didn’t win on Sunday, and after I lost $100, I quit.  We ended up going to bed at 3am, which sucked because we had to get up at 6:30am for our flight.

So.  The wedding went smoothly, no SNAFUs or crises.  I think all of our friends enjoyed themselves.  I had not considered the fact that once I arrived in Vegas I would go into “super special event planner mode” which shouldn’t be a surprise as that’s my nature and MO.  So I think I’d like to go back one day, just to enjoy Vegas and see the rest of the city.

Thing to Do #18: Study the Kama Sutra and Put Theory into Practice

The photo to the right is a framed poster based on an original print on display at the World Erotic Museum in Miami. I loved it so much, I purchased it during my visit to the Museum back in 2007 and it hangs in our bedroom, away from the prying eyes of visitors (Really, it’s not a big deal. We have a nude Modigliani print in our kitchen that takes most people aback). The book (below) sits on my night table.

Thing to Do #18 is “Study the Kama Sutra and Put Theory Into Practice.” I recognize that this is another one of those “private” posts. In the book there are 9 different positions; only 1 position has escaped me all these years. Without going into much detail, I’ll just say it requires a LOT of upper body strength from both the female and the male and, as I’ve mentioned, I have no upper body strength (that’s why “Do a Pull Up” is on my 40 Before 40 list).

I’m a married woman so I figure it’s not the worst thing in the world to talk about this. Between “Join the Mile High Club” and “Have Adventurous Sex,” there are some things on the 101 Things Before You Die List that you just can’t brag about!

So…um…have you “mastered the Kama Sutra”?

ADULT Festivals

When I found this link to Adult Festivals, I had to pass it on.  And warning, many of these festivals are adult.  You know what I mean.  These festivals definitely are not for little ones.

  • Wife Carrying World ChampionshipsSonkajarvi, Finland, July

Hubbies hoist their fair ladies over their back, shoulders or neck like a sack of potatoes and must carry them across a 250 m obstacle course that includes a water jump. The tradition was born of a rather barbarian habit of stealing women from neighbouring villages in the 19th century.

  • Mardi Gras – New Orleans, February/March

We all know about Mardi Gras

  • Testicle Festival – Clinton, Montana, August

For five days, between 10,000 and 15,000 hungry revelers in varying states of undress and sobriety, tuck into plates of severed, beer-battered, deep-fried bull’s testicles, having a ball of a time.

I think I’ll skip this one.

  • Matchmaking Festival – Lisdoonvarna, Ireland, September

Billed as Europe’s largest singles event, thousands of singletons descend on the old town looking for love and a rollicking good time.  The festival is about 150 years old and centers around its healing mineral waters.

When the fall harvest was all turned in, swarms of randy bachelors used to make a pilgrimage to the spa town to bathe in its waters and find themselves a nice little wife with the help of a master matchmaker.  Today there’s only one official cupid left in the town, and while many go, not to find a spouse but have some casual fun, a lot of love matches are made through another medium — bottomless liquid courage.

  • Folsom Street Fair  – San Francisco, California, September

The Folsom Street Fair is the world’s largest leather event and attracts more than 400,000 people.  Once a year, the normally quiet subculture of sadomasochists emerges from under the cover of night to take over the streets of San Francisco and publicly display their taste for bondage and dominatrix in broad daylight.  I have actually heard of this one; we may have to get Miranda to go visit and report back on this one.

  • Nudes-A-Poppin Pageant and Festival – Roselawn, Indiana, July

Bits and bobs dangle everywhere the eye can see at this naked beauty pageant where, let’s face it, no one’s looking at the contestant’s smile.  The odd girl will throw on a boa — perhaps to cover up when there’s a chill in the air — but safe for the tats and accessories that’s all that’s worn.

The annual pageant is held every July at the Ponderosa Sun Club, a nudist resort in Roselawn, Ind., and has been attended by such luminaries as David Faustino, also known as Bud Bundy from Married with Children, Kid Rock and Gene Simmons.  The girls compete for such illustrious titles as Miss Nude Galaxy and Most Beautiful Natural Body — because shock of all shocks, not everything on display at this beauty pageant is God-given.  There’s also something for the gals with Mr. Nude Entertainer and Mr. Nude North America.

Since I’ve now been to a Nudist Resort, what’s the big deal with going to a Nudist Pageant?

  • Hounen Matsuri – Komaki, Japan, March 15 every year

Locals erect a statue of a 2.5 m-long wooden phallus and carry it on a float like a king, from one shrine to another and present it as a gift to the female deity of agricultural fertility.  The festival celebrates rebirth and appeals to the gods for a bountiful harvest and fertility.  Couples are encouraged to touch the phallus or one of the several small wooden schmeckle replicas for healthy babies. Free sake is passed through the crowd and souvenirs include penis-shaped candies and keychains.

I would giggle the entire time.

  • Oktoberfest – Munich, Germany, September through to October

Go child-free and have a stein or three, while soaking in the festive Bavarian atmosphere. If you’re single, find yourself a buxomly blond fraulein or sturdy, lederhosen-ed Hanz.  Careful, though, you may trip over a few victims of the free flowing beer and excess as they lie comatose in the streets, whom the locals refer to as “Bierleichen,” or beer corpses.  More than six million litres of beer are consumed by thirsty attendees each year.

This one is already on this list.

  • Running of the Bulls – Pamplona, Spain, July 7 – July 14 every year

So far, 15 people have died since record-keeping began. But the Running of the Bulls, the highlight of the Festival of San Fermin, is on the bucket lists of many kamikaze, adrenaline junkie types. The run from the pen to the bull-ring is 825 m and takes just minutes. To enter the race, you have to be over the age of 18.

This one is already on the list, too.

  • Erotica – Olympia exhibition centre, London, UK, November

Billed as the world’s largest erotic show and exhibition for adults, the Erotica show attracts 70,000 Brits who, for a few days, unfurl their famous stiff upper lip for a bit of jolly old, raunchy fun.  Scantily-clad ladies assume unnaturally bendy positions on stage and hump stripper poles; fire-breathing fetish guys and gals put on light shows; and everyone has bedroom eyes.  Every manner of sexual aide to help spice up the boudoir is on show at the expo, including come-hither lingerie, the most outrageous fetish costumes and the latest mechanized sex toys.

Anybody going with me to any of these?

End of 2010 Results

So we are at the end of 2010 and I have to say its been a pretty rocking year.  And its not just about checking things off a list.  I did a lot of   L-I-V-I-N this year.  Here’s how I did with my goals for the year:

#1  Write a Novel: Well, the original goal was to start my novel.  I planned to participate in the National Novel Writing Month in November but it ended up not being a success.  Oh, well, I’ve got my start and I’ll keep plugging along!

#16 Get in the Guiness World Book of Records: Did the Skinny Dip Record Challenge in July and got in to the Record book on that one.

I also donated 4 pints of blood toward my goal of being the World’s Biggest Blood Donor.

#30 Stay in the Best Suite in a Five-Star Hotel:  We’ll put this one off until we can afford to blow the cost of mortgage on a night’s stay.  So, you know, when I’m 80.

#36 Visit Every Country:  Completed my year’s goals with trips to New Zealand in March and the Bahamas in April.

#37 Make a Fire Without Matches: Nada

#52 Read the Greatest Books Ever Written:   I said I would read 12 books this year.  Total for the year of the official books, I read: Kestrel for a Knave, Not Fade Away, The Art of War,  Birdsong, David Copperfield, Brighton Rock, The Van, Bonfire of the Vanities, Possession, The Crow Road, Explaining Death to the Dog, and Crash

But I generally kicked ass at reading this year because I read a lot of other books, some of which, while they may not be on the “official” list, are definitely on some “Greatest Book Lists” (some aren’t but hey, everyone needs brain candy every now and then).  The other books I read include: 4 Dexter books, 6 Sookie Books, The Time Traveler’s Wife, Choke, Never Let Me Go, The Sun Also Rises, Bridges of Madison County, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, The Lovely Bones, The Other Boleyn Girl, My Antonia, The Remains of the Day, and The Princess Bride.

I think 33 books in one year is honorable.

#86 Run a Marathon:  I ran the Outer Banks Marathon on November 14, 2010.  The greatest accomplishment of my life.

#93.5 Get Your Name in the Ring of Honor at Flying Saucer: So far I’m up to 123.  I’ll put in the comments the total list as that takes up a lot of space here.

#99 Confess:  Nada again.

Not part of my original goals for the year but also saw the Golden Gate Bridge (#67), visited California (#11), saw Penguins, Dolphins, and Seals in the wild (#38), swam with sharks (#2), went white water rafting (#90), attended a Carolina v. Duke basketball game (#48.5) and went skydiving (#38).

How did you do with your goals for 2010?

The Buried Life Gets Married in Vegas

I talked about The Buried Life last year during their first season on MTV.  I’ve really enjoyed watching these guys complete the items on their list and they are back this year with their second season.  Although they’ve only been on MTV for a couple of years, the guys have actually been working on their list for much longer.  AND, most importantly, they do these items without the help or influence of MTV.

Duncan, Ben, Dave, and Jonnie are much more adventurous than me and I spend most of the episodes with sweaty palms, tense and worried they are getting ready to get arrested (which they actually did get arrested earlier this season when they tried to go streaking during a soccer match).  Last year they: competed in a krump contest, crashed a party at the Playboy mansion, tried to tell a joke on late night television (they eventually did on a Spanish-speaking show), tried to play basketball with Obama (they eventually did in the off-season, but Obama wouldn’t let it be televised), Ben tried to ask out Megan Fox, made a toast at a stranger’s wedding, helped deliver a baby, performed on the street to make money, and threw a badass party.

So far this year, they have: tried to streak a soccer field, Duncan asked out Taylor Swift (and did it!), and marry a stranger in Vegas.  I was rather upset with this last one because I believe in the sanctity in marriage and was disappointed in the idea of marrying a stranger just to mark it off a list.  Dave found a girl to his liking and the boys threw him a monster bachelor party.  They actually went through with it and apparently are still together.  So, maybe its one of those wild, wacky loves that could actually work!  And I haven’t been able to find any backlash/comments online against them having done it (although I’m sure their audience is mostly teenagers/young people who don’t really understand the importance of marriage).  Here’s a video of the new wifey: http://www.mtv.com/videos/misc/587514/follow-up-with-michelle.jhtml#id=1650190

The Buried Life comes on Mondays at 10:30pm on MTV.  I have to admit, last year it seemed “more real.”  This year, it seems like MTV must have floated them some money or are helping out in some way  (although in trying to crash the CMAs to get to Taylor Swift, they were not successful because they were recognized as “those guys from that show”).  Last year, a lot of time each episode was dedicated to helping other people complete items on their list, but there hasn’t been that focus this year.

So are you watching The Buried Life?  What do you think about it?

Third Quarterly Report – Goals for 2010

#1  Write a Novel: I think I’m going to participate in the National Novel Writing Month in November.

#16 Get in the Guiness World Book of Records: Donated 2 pints of blood toward my goal of being the World’s Biggest Blood Donor.  Did the Skinny Dip Record Challenge in July and STILL waiting to hear the official results.  Apparently we’re waiting for a few more sites to report their numbers but supposedly we’re on track to beat last year’s record, so stay tuned.

#30 Stay in the Best Suite in a Five-Star Hotel:  Had planned on celebrating our First Year Anniversary at the Fearrington Inn in Pittsboro but putting this on the back burner for now.  Was hoping to tag along with Alex to Hawaii (work for him) but we’ll see…

#36 Visit Every Country:  Completed with trips to New Zealand and the Bahamas.

#37 Make a Fire Without Matches: Nada

#52 Read the Greatest Books Ever Written:   Of the official books, I read Bonfire of the Vanities by Tom Wolfe, Explaining Death to the Dog by Susan Perabo and Crash by J.G. Ballard.   Other books include: Darkly Dreaming Dexter, Dearly Devoted Dexter and The Princess Bride. So far this year I’ve read 7 of my goal of 12, although I’ve read 19 not on the “official” list.

#86 Run a Marathon:  So far have completed 19 weeks of training and my longest run is 20 miles.  My total mileage is 230 miles and you can follow me at http://my.nike.com/jmhammett .   The Marathon is only 6 weeks away!

#93.5 Get Your Name in the Ring of Honor at Flying Saucer: So far I’m up to 51 this year, 102 total.  I’ve also been trying to work on the GQ list and have drank 4 of those: Allagash White, Anchor Steam, Dogfish Palo Santo Marron, and Ommegang Hennepin

#99 Confess:  Nada again.

Also have: gone white water rafting, went to prison, and pretended I was in High School all over again.

Only 3 more months until the end of the year.  Wow.  I better get cracking on some of these goals!

So how are YOU doing on YOUR goals?  I’m feeling pretty satisfied with mine thus far, but could always be doing more!
