Wow. I haven’t posted since August. I’ve been meaning to and meaning to but things have been crazy busy…but in a good way. So let’s go through the list first and then we’ll talk about life OFF the list.
#2 Swim with Whales: Ok. I went but there were no shows. And I’m putting this on my list for 2014 too. But SPOILER ALERT: I went on Saturday and ACTUALLY SAW WHALES! It was so awesome, it far surpassed what I could have possible hoped for. It definitely made up for missing them last year. But I’ll post (with video and maybe photos) later about that. So. Not successful in 2013. But done nonetheless!
#8 Sell a piece of art (and realize my childhood dream, which is #28 on the 40/40 list): I’m getting closer in that I am actually making art. So I’ve started to carve out time to actually create. A step in the right direction, I think
#46 Scuba Diving: I never did practice my SCUBA skills this summer. I kept putting it off and putting it off. And then I was making plans to go swim with Manatees in January 2014 but that fell through too…but for a more awesome plan! I’ll tell you about that in my Goals for 2014 but I definitely want to make this a priority for next year.
#52 Read the Greatest Books Ever Written (#7 on the 40/40 list): I was only supposed to read 2 this year and I didn’t even do that. I did go see The Comedy of Errors performed by Raleigh Little Theater so at least I checked off a Shakespeare play for the year. I really didn’t read at all this year. I really want that to change next year.
#65 Shout ‘Drinks Are on Me!’ in a Pub or Bar (#17 on the 40/40 list): Nope.
#84 Learn to Ski (#32 on the 40/40 list): COMPLETED! Went in January and had a blast.
Goals from my 40 Before I’m 40 List:
#1 Be Able to Do a Pull Up: Ok, I got up to 100 pounds but couldn’t get any further. And I also kept pulling my trapezium muscle every time I worked out on the assisted pull up machine so that deterred me from trying. But I really do want to do this so I have renewed my efforts for 2014
#11 Learn to Rock Climb: COMPLETED! Went rock climbing on Pilot Mountain for “real” rock climbing in March.
#12 Take a Cooking Class: Nothing yet.
#18 Watch the Top 250 IMDB List/Watch All of the Oscar Best Picture Winners: None. Isn’t that sad? Once upon a time I KILLED movie lists! Now I just don’t make the time. I want to make more time in the new year for both reading and watching movies again. I miss it.
#25 Drink All the Beers on the GQ List: Gah. I went through a phase of such horrible ones, I really didn’t want to do it anymore. Reconsidering this goal…
#31 Learn to swim (#87 on the 101 list: Conquer Your Fear): COMPLETED!
#35 Visit all of the NC Breweries: The original goal was to visit 7 this year. I was an overachiever and visited 13: Trophy Brewing, Raleigh Brewing, Outer Banks Brewing Station, Full Moon Brewery, Deep River Brewing, Mother Earth Brewing, Double Barley Brewery, Crank Arm Brewery, Heist Brewing, Wedge Brewing, Appalachian Mountain Brewing,Top of the Hill, and Steel String Brewing.
#36 Learn How to Ballroom Dance: No Ballroom dancing but lots of belly dancing and Bollywood dancing and I feel that should count for something! I actually did more belly dancing at the end of the year and have kinda fallen in love with it. I plan to do more in 2014.
From the Sports List:
#18 Attend a rugby game (and learn the rules): Nope
#19 Attend a cricket game (and learn the rules): Nope

I did lots of fun things at the end of the year that I never got to blog about.
I did the Electric Run in September.
A group of friends and I stayed on a private island in the middle of the French Broad River. There was no running water; the shower was rain barrel fed and it had an incinerating toilet. We hiked all around on the Blue Ridge Parkway and visited waterfalls and played in the river. It was my first week long vacation in three years and it was AWESOME!
I went to a 60s themed party and won first prize.
My beloved Escape hit 250,000 miles and she’s still truckin’. I love her. I’ll cry when she dies.
So those are all the list worthy things I did this year. A lot of things that weren’t on the original goals list for the year but still a lot. Actually, I had kinda felt disappointed with the number of things I had done this year until I wrote it all down here and now I’m thinking it was a good year!
It was actually a great year but for a lot of things that happened off the list.
I started this a couple of years ago but I’ve gotten rid of a lot of STUFF. STUFF you just don’t need. I keep doing it in waves but I’ve really gotten rid of a lot of unnecessary things. Some things I just give away to Goodwill but some things I’ve sold online or sold at consignment or yard sales. It feels good to be unburdened by STUFF and I want to continue to do that.
I also worked hard to become a lot healthier this year. While I still drink beer and eat junk food, I do each a LOT less. Fast food is seldom a part of my diet these days and I’ve really cleaned up my diet all around. I’m still not perfect and I’d never want to totally give up chocolate or beer anyway, but I feel a lot better. I’m still working out regularly and have continued to maintain my weight loss from a couple of years ago.
And I’ve also worked to get chemicals out of my home. All of my cosmetics, toiletries, and cleaning supplies are free of the most harmful chemicals and as often as I can, actually have all natural products. The exception is my hair dye because I’ve GOT to cover up this gray! Hopefully if I’ve gotten rid of everything else, the hair dye won’t kill me.
This was quite a production because it meant finding replacement products that worked as well as my long time favorites. Finding makeup was particularly difficult but I finally found 100% Pure which has a great line that worked well. Natural deodorant that WORKED was also difficult and but I finally found some awesome homemade stuff that works great! It’s a little more expensive to do it this way but with all of my cancer scares, I think it’s worth it. I feel better knowing I’m not rubbing myself in cancer causing agents every day, and at least I can say I’m trying to do everything I know to do to avoid it.
So, I had a GREAT 2013. I hope you did too. And I’m already thinking 2014 will be even better!
