It’s Called a Lance. He-loooo!

I attended my first Renaissance Faire this past Sunday.  Held in a small town nearby, it was about what I expected and we had fun.  Afterall, the spirit of the list is to step out and do new things, even if it is to traipse around a field with little nerdlings that attempt to stay in character and exclaim over our “magic boxes” we’re using to communicate with one another.

We missed out on getting giant turkey legs by four people so we had to settle on ye olde gyros.  But we sampled lots of mead; I liked the wildberry and blackberry versions although the pear cider was much more to my liking.

There was sword fighting and jousting and even throwing axes (Alex didn’t get any of his 5 to stick in the wall but 2 of 5 of mine did.  So he’s better at breathing underwater and I’m better at throwing axes.)

Sword Fighting in front of the Queen. I especially like the trailer park in the background

My Ax Style is No Match for Your Monkey Style

My two axes in the board, even though I missed the targets

Jousting!

Anyone else been to a Ren Faire?  Particularly enjoy it? Anyone else a huge fan of A Knight’s Tale and can repeat it line for line?

About Jessica

Mild mannered marketing drone by day. Bucket list adventurer by late afternoon. Having first drafted a list in high school, Jessica's list of things to do before she dies has slowly taken over her life and consumes her thoughts. Because of the list, she has traveled to Mordor, plummeted towards the Earth's surface from 13,000 feet up, cavorted with whale sharks in open water, skinny dipped herself into the Guinness World Book, and cursed the day she was born during the last miles of a Marathon. It's safe to say that if Jessica is doing it, it's on the list.

  1. Ah! I used to go to the ren faire every year growing up. I really only went because there was this dessert there that I was obsessed with. And I loved wearing big dresses. I think I’d be a fan of the pear cider myself if I went as an adult ;)

  2. This looks like fun! The freshmen of my high school held a renaissance fair every year and we got to play games. When it was my year, they didn’t go a fair- we just watched Shakespeare in Love instead.

  3. Row of trailers of not this looks like huge fun. Check another one off your list :) HEY!

    • Just to be clear, I wasn’t trying to hate on trailers. I’m only one generation removed from them myself. Just pointing out how far out in the country we were more than anything else.

  4. As much as I love a turkey leg, I think I would have chose the gyro. My friends have gone to a ren fair, but I’ve never made it yet. This looks super fun!

    • I told myself that gyros COULD be from the middle ages. They had a kind of flat bread then and chicken and peppers, maybe not the gyro sauce, but still, it could happen.

  5. I went to a Renaissance fair a really long time ago. I remember liking it and having a lot of fun though. I wish they had axe throwing when I went, I would love to try that.

    • They also had knife throwing and star throwing, fencing instruction, and lots of little “shows” that we didn’t even take advantage of. We concentrated on mead, jousting, and finding a “bodice” for me, which I forgot to even mention. Still, we were there for several hours.

  6. First of all, axe throwing is a real life skill. No one needs to breathe underwater. What happens when you have a burglar and need to throw an axe? Done.

My favorite part of the Renfest is the Death Joust. I love staying until the last moment to watch it. We always root for the black knight because it’s more fun.

My friends and I were there one time and my friend shouted to the black knight “I want to have your children!” The black knight and his squire could not stop laughing. It was hysterical. That’s my Renfest story.

    • Yeah, the knights were pretty funny, lots of banter back and forth and there was clearly a “good knight” and a “bad knight” but we were kinda rooting for the bad knight. And Alex said he could escape me by going underwater, although I pointed out that he’d have to come back up for more air sometime.

  7. I forgot to say this:

Also I love me some Italian ices. I’m not sure what they have to do with the Renfest, but I get one every year… These are the yearly traditions: Stock Show, Renfest. We’re big on our huge undertakings here in Colorado.

  8. Ha ha @ ye olde gyros.

Looks like you wield a pretty strong axe there.

  9. This is so much fun. The best part is dressing up in costume. It seems the more cleavage the better!

  10. I’m geeky enough to enjoy the whole might and magic thing but not enough to want to dress up LOL I would imagine it was a fun day out though.
