Mixing It Up With Beer

Since I began my quest towards 200 different beers at Flying Saucer, I’ve been intrigued by a certain category on the back of the “Fly Paper” (beer menu that lists the over 300 beers they have at any given time).  The drinks in this section are a little different as they are beer cocktails: beers mixed with one another to make a new drink…and these count toward my total.

(Sorry for the picture quality but that’s a Cream of Wheat to the right.  Most of the half and half beers stay layered, which I was trying to show in this picture, but dark bar + cell phone=crap photo).

Some are fairly common, but some are unique to Flying Saucer:

  • Black and Tan-Bass and Guinness (tasty on St. Patrick’s Day ;) )
  • Black Velvet-Guinness and pear cider
  • Humingbird Water-pear cider with raspberry lambic
  • Lava Lamp-stout and lager with a splash of raspberry lambic
  • Cream of Wheat-Stout and hefeweizen
  • Chocolate Truffle-Chocolate stout with raspberry lambic
  • Lime n’ Lager-Harp Lager with a splash of Sprite and a twist of lime.
  • Raspberries n’ Cream-Raspberry lambic & a white ale

It’s probably because I like most of these on their own (raspberry lambic=liquid candy) but I’ve enjoyed all of these…very much.  I’m up to 149…only 51 more beers to go!

Have you tried any of these?  Have any beers you think I should get in during my last quarter of the list?

It's safe to say that if Jessica is doing it, it's on the list.

  1. 149 beers! That’s really impressive. I’m not a beer drinker but the raspberry/chocolate and sprite/lime one sounds pretty yummy. Do you get to have your name on their wall of fame for trying all their beers?

On a different note, I experienced a minor sandstorm. It was very windy and sand gets into your eyes, etc. The more severe one happened a week before I arrived and they had to shut down air traffic.

    • Glad you didn’t get caught up in the Sandstorm, although the photos of it were amazing. And yes, after 200 beers, I get my name, the date of completion and a quote on a plate on the wall.

  2. The first one sounds delicious!

    • Most of them are-even my husband will drink them so they aren’t girly or anything…although my fave is Hummingbird Water, which is a little girly.

  3. I really like a snakebite – equal parts lager and cider. I want to try the chocolate truffle! And I agree, raspberry lambic is liquid candy. That is on my Pub Passport.

    • Stefanie, you are my hero! I knew I was leaving one out and it’s Snakebite! I haven’t had it yet so that’s why I couldn’t remember what the other one was on the menu. Thanks!

  4. I love Black and Tans! Even though I dislike dark beer…I want to try the hummingbird though I’m sure I’d like it!

    • You could prolly make it at home if you can’t find it out: pear cider (do you have Woodchuck where you are?) and raspberry lambic (I prefer Lindeman’s). Mostly pear cider with a healthy splash of the lambic.

  5. Im not much of a beer drinker but all those names sound very interesting. You are so close to reaching your goal; that’s ecxiting! I completly simpathyize with the cell phone cam situation.

  6. Black velvets are my favorite! But for some reason here in san francisco they are called something else and I can never remember what.

I think that chocolate truffle is next on the list to try. yum!!

  7. I’ve never really tried mixed beer drinks, but these sound great. And I like anything that tastes like candy!

  8. So much beer! Haha, to be honest I’ve never been able to finish a glass of any kind. I think there is on Canadian beer that I kinda like, but kudos on this challenge because I’d fail at it miserably!

    • Before I started this challenge, I couldn’t finish a glass myself. But now I’ve at least found some I actually enjoy. I’ve also found some that were completely horrible!

  9. Wow 149 beers! That’s pretty good going! I’m currently on 92, many of which are pretty mainstream, but also includes numerous ales and and international beers. Weissbiers from Austria are my current favourite. I don’t get them all from the same place unfortunately so theres no prize for me! If I live near a flying saucer in the future I’ll go for it again!

  10. I’m very impressed! Don’t you wish you could put something like this on a resume and get away with it?

When you reach 200, I have a fun beer for you. It’s called Coldsberg, and it’s the cheapest and most disgusting beer you’ll ever try.

  11. I like Black and Tans. That’s probably because Guinness and Bass are two of my favorite beers.

  12. I’ve only been to flying saucer once. Looks like I’ll be making another trip now :) Probably won’t get through all 200 in one night..lol.

  13. Wow..!! What a great way to enjoy the different beers…This post is meant for the guys who loves to drink beers of many types…
