A Visit with the Hostess of the South

Today I was able to explore Savannah with Alex and I got to play tour guide based off all of my exploring I did yesterday.  I took him to River Street and we ate lunch watching the ships coming and going on the Savannah River.  We walked down to the Waving Girl and then took the trolley back up the street to head to Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum (this was something Alex wanted to do-sometimes I’m a good wife and let him choose things to do).

We headed down Broughton Street, which is the big retail street in Savannah, but the main reason was to get to Leopold’s Ice Cream, which is rated one of the best ice cream places in America (this is the site of the original Tutti Frutti Ice Cream).  And it actually lived up to the hype.  I had chocolate raspberry ice cream and Alex had frozen hot cocoa.

Then we just kinda wondered around looking at all of the houses and walking around the squares.  We happened to find ourselves at the Cathedral again and although it was after 4:30, the doors were still open for Confession so we took advantage of going in to visit (I was actually in a Catholic Church during Confession time and I STILL didn’t accomplish #101 on the 101 Things to Do Before You Die List!).  They still had their Christmas decorations up, including a Christmas Nativity scene, which is the largest and most involved I’ve ever seen (it actually had a water feature, amongst other things).

We’ve made dinner reservations at The Pirate House, which is where some of the action in Treasure Island is supposed to have taken place.  Tis’ said that old Captain Flint, who originally buried the fabulous treasure on Treasure Island, died here in an upstairs room.  Alex is a big fan of all things pirate (you find a lot of it in North Carolina, being the site of Blackbeard and the like), so we had to make sure to visit here.  Perhaps we’ll run into some ghosts since this is supposed to be one of the most haunted places in Savannah.

Well, my big surprise to you was supposed to be meeting fellow thing-to-do’er Edith at http://edidod.blogspot.com/.  I’ve already managed to meet one TTD, Miranda, in March 2010 and it went super well.  For various reasons, we weren’t able to work it out but we’ll get together again because Savannah has become one of my favorite towns and I’ll definitely be back!

About Jessica

Mild mannered marketing drone by day. Bucket list adventurer by late afternoon. Having first drafted a list in high school, Jessica's list of things to do before she dies has slowly taken over her life and consumes her thoughts. Because of the list, she has traveled to Mordor, plummeted towards the Earth's surface from 13,000 feet up, cavorted with whale sharks in open water, skinny dipped herself into the Guinness World Book, and cursed the day she was born during the last miles of a Marathon. It's safe to say that if Jessica is doing it, it's on the list.

  1. Savannah is such a charming town. I’m glad you enjoyed your stay. Giving confession is a very personal and intimidating thing (to me at least), so I understand why you have yet to get it done.

  2. Sounds like you had a great time. Thank you for posting the pics from the cemetery! My friend and I read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil last year and we decided that “some day” we will take a trip to Savannah together and visit the cemetary at midnight. I was wondering, is that ice cream shop part of a documentary about the best ice cream in America? I thought maybe it was.

    • I haven’t heard about the documentary. They’ve been mentioned on a few Food Network shows and listed on a couple of travel lists/best ice cream lists. Either way, it was good! And I guess I’m going to need to read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil now.

  3. Sounds like you’re having an awesome time! I didn’t know if was possible, but I want to go even more now!
