I’ve won several awards in my life. The first award that I remember was “Student of the Week” when I was in Kindergarten. I was a Kiwanis “Terrific Kid” for several years in Elementary School and in playing Recreation Softball for Glendale-Chapel, we won the tournament twice, once in 1990 and again in 1992, which generated getting small trophies.
Because I fancied myself an artist, I entered drawing and arts competitions. I won a $50 Gift Certificate to be used at the local Rose’s Store, won a stuffed Killer Whale from Sea World, and won the county-wide student art competiton in third grade, going to the state level and having my art displayed in the North Carolina State Capitol.
In high school, I was awarded some individual class awards (i.e. Geometry Award, Chemistry II Award, Art II Award, etc) but it was in high school where I won two of the three awards of which I am most proud: All Conference in Softball and the Dale Wayne Aycock Scholarship. I started playing softball when I was 8 years old. By the time I was 12, I was playing 10 months out of the year (from mid-February to mid-December). I played softball all four years of high school, not playing Varsity until my Junior year. In my Senior year, I was given “All-Conference” recognition, which was the pinnacle of my athletic career.
Also when I was a senior, there were several local scholarships available to me and my fellow students. The largest of these was the Dale Wayne Aycock Scholarship, of which I was the proud recipient.
Moving on to college, I was awarded several awards. Upon application, I was given a Leadership Scholarship from Hollins and twice during my tenure, I was awarded the Isabella Manchester Art Award, which was a small award designed to off-set studio art costs. It was at the end of my Junior year that I was awarded my third favorite award: Frances Niederer Scholarship. The Frances Niederer Scholarship was awarded to the Art History major with the highest GPA. Winning the award was not only an honor, but it meant my entire senior year of college was now completely funded.
Most recently, I was given a plaque by the Johnston County Arts Council in recogintion of my leadership and hard work while I was executive director there. It meant a lot to me to be recognized and the plaque is displayed in my office at the Ava Gardner Museum.
I feel like this Thing to Do should be pretty easy to obtain as everyone has been awarded a prize at some point in their lives, even if its winning a sweepstakes or a prize at the county fair. What’s your favorite award or prize?
