Christmas Brings Some of the Greatest Books of All Time

Purchasing books when there are perfectly wonderful libraries around may seem like a waste of money for some, but I do love reading and love looking at my bookshelves, full of novels that I can look at and remember fondly.  Perhaps remembering where I was when I read it, what time of my life, who I was with, etc.  I remember reading (and LOVING) A Prayer for Owen Meaney while on a cruise two years ago, Frankenstein was “read” via book on CD as I traveled to a funeral in Virginia (I count listening to a book on CD as having read the book because listening to it being read actually takes longer than if I just sat down and read it myself), A Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy was read Senior year of High School.

On my Christmas wish list this year were the remaining books that I have not yet read and Santa brought me quite a few: Brighton Rock, The Buddha of Suburbia, The Day of the Triffids, The Crow Road, Asterix and the Golden Sickle, and An Artist of the Floating World.  I’ve actually already read The Buddha of Suburbia, The Day of the Triffids, and Asterix and the Golden Sickle, thanks to my annual Holiday sickness (I tend to get sick on most holidays and vacations).  Asterix and the Golden Sickle is quite odd as it is a comic book for kids.  The Day of the Triffids was surprisingly good!  Its a Sci-Fi book, which normally wouldn’t be my bag, but it has this dystopian theme, which, for whatever reason, I enjoy.

I have a horrible habit of starting a book and not finishing.  As much as I love reading, if it doesn’t grab me in the first 50 pages or so, its so difficult to keep at it.  I’ve started The Crow Road, but it keeps switching times and charcters so I don’t know what I think yet.  Here’s to a new year of new and exciting reading!

About Jessica

Mild mannered marketing drone by day. Bucket list adventurer by late afternoon. Having first drafted a list in high school, Jessica's list of things to do before she dies has slowly taken over her life and consumes her thoughts. Because of the list, she has traveled to Mordor, plummeted towards the Earth's surface from 13,000 feet up, cavorted with whale sharks in open water, skinny dipped herself into the Guinness World Book, and cursed the day she was born during the last miles of a Marathon. It's safe to say that if Jessica is doing it, it's on the list.
